Alexandria Harmonizers Youth Harmony Programs

The Alexandria Harmonizers believe in giving back!  Each of our performers started under the mentorship and guidance of another more experienced performer.  And with years of experience performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, etc., we know it's time to be the mentors for the next generation.  The Alexandria Harmonizers have a rich history of supporting new performers of all ages.  Below you will find some of our more formalized programs and how to participate or provide support.

Youth Harmony Festival

With support provided by the Mid-Atlantic District, BHS, the Barbershop Harmony Society, and Sweet Adelines International, the Alexandria Harmonizers conduct annual Youth Harmony Festivals for any male and female youth in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Festival provides students with top-notch choral instruction in a cappella vocal and performance techniques, as demonstrated through the barbershop style.

The Youth Harmony Festival provides music educators skilled in the art of youth music education, along with teaching quartets, coaches, and judges from the Barbershop Harmony Society, Sweet Adelines International and the Alexandria Harmonizers Chorus.

Students are asked to pay a small registration fee, while donations cover the remaining expenses for the full day event, instructional materials, venue fees, lunch, dinner, refreshments, and a complimentary Youth Harmony Festival t-shirt.

The 2012 Youth Harmony Festival was conducted on April 14th 2012 with 54 outstanding young performers filling the risers.  Please check back soon or contact the Youth Harmony Coordinator for information on the 2013 Youth Harmony Festival.

Harmony Workshops

As part of our ongoing mission to support youth harmony, the Alexandria Harmonizers have developed a Harmony Workshop program which extends our ability to provide expert vocal instruction directly to public and private school classrooms. All expenses (instructional materials, music educator salaries, and transportation) to support Harmony Workshops are covered by the Alexandria Harmonizers. Local schools can arrange for Harmony Workshops to be conducted in their classrooms at no cost, saving valuable resources for other music education initiatives.

If you are an educator and would like more information on facilitating a Harmony Workshop at your school, please contact us at alexandria.harmonizers@gmail.com.

The Capital Force

In 2010, The Alexandria Harmonizers sponsored the creation of The Capital Force, a youth harmony chorus open to all men in the DC area under the age of 30. While the chorus is still relatively new, they have already started performances as special guests at various venues and participated in the 2011 Barbershop Harmony Society Mid-Winter Convention and Competition.

While members of The Capital Force are not required to be members of the Barbershop Harmony Society or the Alexandria Harmonizers, they must be under the age of 30 and be able to attend monthly rehearsals in Alexandria, VA.

The Alexandria Harmonizers provide financial, leadership, and musical support for The Capital Force. The music direction staff (Joseph Cerutti and Anthony Colosimo) and operational leadership are all members of the Alexandria Harmonizers.
