The first annual "Aca-Challenge" contest was a smashing success. The Harmonizers produced this modern a cappella contest with six contestant groups at the historic Lincoln Theater in the heart of DC's "U Street" entertainment district on Saturday, March 22, 2014.
Newcomers Word of Mouth won the $1000 first prize. By the judge's score, they had tied with veterans The Chromatics, but the tie was broken by the audience's text-message voting. The Chromatics received the $500 second prize, with first-time competitors the GW Vibes taking third for $250. The other contestants -- The Noctonals, Capital Blend, and the UWM Symfonics -- each received $100.
Barbershop favorite Rick Taylor emceed, and the Harmonizers did a set while the judge's votes were being tabulated, which included the premier of two new numbers, "The Glen Miller Medley" and "Tribute to World Peace", and its own modern acappella ensemble, TBD, debuting their latest song, "Make Me Lose Control".
With a nearly full and highly enthusiastic audience, proud contestants, an elated chorus, and a vibrant after-party, the "Aca-Challenge" was by all measures a grand success.
